Allergic Inflammation Laboratory

Allergic inflammation is a significant medical problem that underlies common diseases such as asthma and rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

This laboratory seeks to understand the immunological mechanisms underlying allergic inflammation with a view to developing novel agents with therapeutic potential.

The research we are undertaking focuses on the novel regulatory abilities of mast cells, with an emphasis on how these dynamic cells contribute to the regulation of inflammation associated with allergy and skin cancer development.

Current research projects

  • Defining novel molecular mechanisms that regulate IgE- and toll-like receptor- mediated mast cell activation: Activation of the high affinity receptor for IgE, FceRI, can be controlled by inherent inhibitory mechanisms in the mast cell. This project aims to understand how certain ubiquitin ligases control mast cell activation following IgE and TLR-mediated stimulation.
  • Elucidating the function of the Rho-ROCK pathway in mast cell function: We have established that mast cells express all components of the Rho-ROCK signalling pathway and are now working to determine the role of this cytoskeletal remodelling pathway in skin carcinogenesis or settings of allergic inflammation.
